The Story

Poeticwear started in a tiny bedroom in Edinburgh, Scotland. I laid some fabric on an ironing board late at night and painted a few verses from Nizar Qabbani’s poetry. I remember looking at the half-finished fabric and thinking, “This is where poetry belongs… on something that moves. Something that can be held, worn, traveled with, slept beside. A story that follows us as we live through our own.”

Since then, the project has branched out into many avenues. It’s become a story of a woman’s passage into freedom. A journey away from home, and towards home. It is a way of life that breathes its message through textile.

Poeticwear isn’t about painting pretty words on fabric. It’s an invitation to wear a poem, and to reflect on who we are as bearers of that poetry. The calligraphy I paint isn’t meant to be read but experienced as a feeling. It’s a dance of words against thrifted and repurposed fabric. It’s my little piece of Syria that I get to send home with others.
